Cannabis
Is it legal?
“Marijuana” (cannabis containing ≥0.3% concentration of THC) is illegal in Tennessee for both medical and recreational purposes. Some cannabis products are permitted to sell with a license, specifically those with low-THC content under 0.3% THC.
THC and CBD
There are two compounds most often marketed in products derived from the cannabis plant: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the primary psychoactive compound which causes the sensations of being high. CBD is non-psychoactive and does not cause sensations of being high.
What about health benefits?
Most research related to health benefits of cannabis are for CBD, such as chronic pain relief. THC products are not recommended for health benefits. According to the CDC, THC products are associated with health risks such as physical dependency, social anxiety, psychosis, and impaired driving.
Isn’t it normal at college?
64% of MTSU students have never used cannabis according to the 2025 National Collegiate Health Assessment. Additionally, emerging research suggests that more frequent cannabis use is associated with lower GPA level and higher levels of procrastination.
